Skullcandy’s well known Skullcrushers have only gotten better with age. With each new release of this popular model, new adjustments are made, taking the headphones incrementally toward perfection. Now, the addition of a portable subwoofer makes the latest version of the Skullcrushers more attractive yet.

Unlike Skullcandy’s Hesh and the SK Pro DJ headphones, which captivate audio fanatics seeking a more general experience with high quality headphones, the Skullcrushers are aimed at a specific audience. Their subwoofer is the main attraction to the head carnival delivered with these gigantic ear beats, along with the Skullcrushers’ portability. If you really love quality bass, or you’re in frequent situations where you still want to feel that deep pulse without disturbing other people, then these subwoofer packing Stereo Skullcrushers may be right for you. When it comes to upscale headphones, Skullcandy only has one model: the SK Pro DJ. What Skullcandy loses in variety against other brands, which often deploy multiple high end models, it makes up for in quality. The SK Pro DJ headphones combine Skullcandy’s remarkable style with a luxurious design. This headset provides a richness of sound and all the extra parts you would expect from a pair that could cost up to three times more from other manufacturers.

Its $100+ price tag can appear steep, but serious audiophiles leaping into professional models, or those who want studio level sound that won’t empty their bank account, cannot do better than the SK Pro DJs. Before writing this review, I looked high and low across the internet for a pair that offers as much as these headphones for a similar price. No dice. You cannot outdo the sheer quality offered for the price with these headphones, especially if you get them for a steal from Amazon.

When looking for a mid-level pair of Skullcandy over the ear headphones that’s affordable and balances style with quality, Hesh is the winning choice. Walking through store aisles or shopping the internet, smart audiophiles have a pretty good idea of what’s high end or pure garbage in the headphone world. Mid-level headphones straddling these two extremes are harder to judge, though. Fortunately, Skullcandy’s Hesh line hits its target, with all the qualities you would expect a field pair of headphones to have, and actually does its job better than similar brands.

Good Sound is Golden

As with any headphones, sound quality is the most important factor. Hesh has speakers with 50 mm diameters, and its frequency response is in the 18-20K Hz range. This frequency means the headphones can deliver nearly any sound human hearing is able to pick up on, and it’s also a favorable range for transmitting quality bass.
